Mysterious respiratory disease in dogs: what we know so far
A mysterious respiratory disease is spreading among dogs in the United States. They have reported the outbreak in at least four states, including Oregon, Colorado, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island.
The disease causes symptoms such as fever, coughing, nasal and eye
discharge, and loss of appetite. In rare cases, it can lead to hospitalization
or death, especially in older or more vulnerable dogs.
The cause of the disease is still unknown. Scientists are not sure if the same pathogen causes all the cases, or if it is a virus or bacteria.
Antibiotics do not seem to be effective against the disease.
Researchers are collecting samples from veterinary clinics to try to
identify the disease and find common DNA segments. David Needle, a veterinary
pathologist, told CNN that a pathogen causes, it is
likely that it has been around for some time and that a mutation has increased
its virulence, which would explain the low effectiveness of drugs."
The Oregon Veterinary Medical Association is urging caution, but not panic.
The association says that while this particular disease is unusual, periodic
outbreaks of canine infectious respiratory diseases (CIRDs) can occur in dog
populations.
The association is advising dog owners to consult veterinarians if their
pets show symptoms, to avoid gatherings of dogs, and to avoid sharing water
bowls with other dogs.
How we can prevent our dog from this disease ?
Here are some tips for protecting your dog from the disease:
·
Keep your dog up to date on vaccinations, including the bordetella vaccine.
·
Avoid taking your dog to crowded places where other dogs may be present.
·
If your dog starts showing symptoms of respiratory illness, contact your
veterinarian immediately.
It is important to note that the disease is still under investigation, and
it is not yet clear how to prevent it.
What to do if your dog is showing symptoms
If your dog is showing symptoms of the mysterious respiratory disease, it
is important to seek veterinary care immediately. Your veterinarian will be
able to diagnose the disease and recommend the best course of treatment.
In the meantime, there are a few things you can do to help your dog feel
better:
·
Keep your dog comfortable and hydrated.
·
Offer your dog soft food or treats that are easy to eat.
